Back in November 2018, Patrick Mahomes has guided the Chiefs to victories in nine of their first 10 games, doing so in blazing fashion.
Mahomes, in his first season as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback, had thrown for 3,150 yards with 31 touchdowns and his fame was skyrocketing.
Then something unexpected happened.
ESPN’s Seth Wickersham wrote a lengthy profile piece on Mahomes, and casually mentioned that he puts ketchup on his steak. That story also noted Mahomes was too shy to ask for the ketchup at a KC restaurant.
That revelation didn’t alter how fans see Mahomes, but it did start quite a debate about ketchup on steak.
These days, it’s just become kind of part of who Mahomes is, and teammate Travis Kelce said in April on his New Heights podcast that their 1587 Prime Steakhouse would have a special ketchup.
Jason Kelce asked if Mahomes still dips his steak in ketchup.
“Breakfast, lunch and dinner,” Travis responded. “It’s just what he does, it’s what he’s been doing.”
And it is what Mahomes will do at 1587 Prime. The steakhouse revealed a few new menu items ahead of next week’s opening that included the “Mahomes Ketchup Flight.”
Here is the description: “a nod to the player’s favorite steak pairing featuring a lineup of three unique ketchups made in-house.”
Yep, three different kinds of ketchups.
No cost was shared for this particular item, per the release from Noble 33, which is partnering with Mahomes and Kelce on the restaurant. The eatery will be located at 1500 Baltimore Ave. in Kansas City.
And when at 1587 Prime, Mahomes won’t be reticent about asking for ketchup.
We also got the details on “The Alchemy,” a mixed drink that is inspired by a song from Kelce’s girlfriend, singer Taylor Swift. Here is what is in that drink: “clarified citrus vodka blend, dry curacao, aronia berry, cranberry, strawberry, lime, oolong tea.”
