A’ja Wilson Criticizes Jalen Brunson’s Suggestion to Lower WNBA Rims
The debate over lowering rims in women’s basketball to increase viewership has reignited recently, fueled by suggestions from NBA figures like Shaquille O’Neal and Jalen Brunson.
Reigning WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson, however, made her stance clear, pushing back against the idea during an appearance on the Roommates Show alongside Knicks stars Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart.
Wilson dismissed the notion, emphasizing the negative impact it could have on players’ mechanics:
“What is it gonna do? I’d rather gear my offseason toward maxing my vertical than adjusting to a lower rim.
Changing the rim height could affect all of our shots.”
Her response addressed Brunson, who had supported the idea to promote dunks in the WNBA.
Wilson argued that lowering rims wouldn’t just encourage dunks but could also disrupt shooting arcs, fundamentally altering gameplay in ways that outweigh potential benefits.
Wilson’s Ever-Growing Legacy
Wilson, often compared to LeBron James for her dominance and versatility, continues to elevate the WNBA.
Speaking to The Wall Street Journal Magazine, she embraced the “LeBron James of the WNBA” label, saying:
“People see someone passionate about the game but who never loses sight of the fun. I try to wear that crown with grace.”
Her ability to control games on both ends of the floor mirrors James’ multi-dimensional influence in the NBA, solidifying her legacy as one of the all-time greats in the WNBA.
By prioritizing growth within the current structure of the game, A’ja Wilson continues to inspire progress for women’s basketball without compromising its integrity.
