The Kansas City Chiefs clinched their ninth-straight AFC West division title with a 19-17 win over the Los Angeles Chargers on “Sunday Night Football.”

It all came down to the final drive, and a promise delivered by Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Matthew Wright’s game-winning field goal off the left upright as time expired, dubbed the “Doink for the Division,” capped off yet another nail-biting finish for the back-to-back Super Bowl champions.

The final kick wasn’t the only drama on the game-winning drive.

Two-time NFL MVP Mahomes completed important passes on 3rd and 10 and 3rd and 7 that allowed the Chiefs to control the clock until the game-winning field goal.

The second clutch conversion was a trademark improvisational play between Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce with less than two minutes to play.

According to reports from after the game, it almost didn’t happen.

Nate Taylor, the Chiefs staff writer for The Athletic.

wrote that Mahomes had to convince Kansas City head coach Andy Reid to let him throw the ball on third down.

“I’ll make something happen,” Mahomes promised Reid.

No matter how much trust Reid and Mahomes have developed on the way to three Lombardi trophies, it was a risky decision.

Calling a pass play could have resulted in an incomplete pass that would have stopped the clock and given Los Angeles the ball back.

Another worrisome outcome was the possibility of a sack.

Mahomes’ crumbling offensive line allowed him to get hit a season-high 13 times during the game.

Chargers linebacker Daiyan Henley had a chance to do just that.

but Mahomes side-stepped him and found Kelce past the first-down marker.

Mahomes admitted after the game that Kelce was supposed to run a different route.

but they still wound up on the same page.

“He’s supposed to run a corner route,” Mahomes said of his tight end.

“It is what it is. I went through my reads.

As I went to get ready to run.

I just saw 87 just sitting right there in the middle of the field.”

Per TrueMedia, Mahomes is responsible for 50 points added on third-down and fourth-down plays this season.

He leads the NFL by a mile over Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen.

who ranks second with 33 points added.

The 29-year-old quarterback delivered on his promise as the triumvirate of Mahomes, Kelce and Reid each showed the faith they have.

established in one another through countless magical moments at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

Kansas City is now 12-1, including a 10-0 record in one-possession games this season.

It was the Chiefs’ 15th consecutive win in a one-score game, an NFL record.
