The Kansas City Chiefs are pleased with what they saw from new WR DeAndre Hopkins following the Week 8 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

Hopkins managed two receptions for 29 yards on three targets in the 27-20 win over the Raiders, filling in for injured WRs Hollywood Brown, Rashee Rice, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Skyy Moore.

The meager stat line doesn’t tell the full story for the veteran wideout in his debut.

Speaking to the media after the game.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid emphasized that Hopkins did a lot with limited practice repetitions during the two work sessions leading up to Sunday’s game.

“Yeah, listen, I thought it was good,” Reid said.

“You know he wanted to be in there, which is a positive and I understand, so he will get more chances the next game.”

Reid added that he felt Hopkins was in the game for a good blend of run and pass plays, giving him a taste of a bit of everything within Kansas City’s offense.

Mahomes, of course, echoed Reid’s assessment of Hopkins’ first game.

“I thought he did a great job,” Mahomes said.

“Obviously, third down he had the big catch early in the game.

And then he had a couple other big plays.”

What was most encouraging to Mahomes was the promise of what lies ahead for Hopkins.

He learned something about him that he recognized just by looking at their tablet a few times in between plays.

“I missed him on the one corner route early, but still got open,” Mahomes continued.

“And then as I looked back at the tablet, there’s a couple times when we were in man coverage where he was really working and winning.

Even the touchdown to Trav (Kelce) I threw, if you look back on his side he’s open for a touchdown there.

“And so now that you see that — I mean, obviously I know the type of player he is — but you see that on the field, it shows that if they’re going to play man coverage against him, he’s going to get open.

And I have to give him the chance to go out there and make plays.”

This week’s game is only the tip of the iceberg for the Mahomes-Hopkins connection.

He’s already learning that Hopkins can be a safety blanket for him against man coverage and that he’ll be able to look his way in those situations.
