Kansas City continues to find ways to win.

Patrick Mahomes after winning the AFC West in 2024

.

Another NFL week went by, and the Kansas City Chiefs once again left it with a victory.

Andy Reid‘s team is now 12-1, has clinched the AFC West .

and looks likely to grab the top seed in the conference when all is said and done.

Despite their record, football fans are still not convinced they’re a great team.

and that’s because they won yet another close game.

The Chiefs have made a living off winning one-score games this season.

Most of it is due to Patrick Mahomes and the offense failing to pull away and blow out teams.

That has led to 10 of Kansas City’s 12 wins coming by seven points or less.

In their most recent win, replacement kicker Matthew Wright saw his game-winning field goal doink off the upright and go in as the clock expired.

That type of luck has fans thinking the team made a deal with the devil.

What would Chiefs’ record be if they lost all their one-score games.

It gets even crazier when you consider what would happen if those one-score results didn’t go in favor of Kansas City.

They would literally have the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

It’s a truly incredible stat, although it should be given at least a little bit of context.

Winning close games is not all luck.

The best teams in the league are cool under pressure.

and the Chiefs have absolutely proven that.

not only this year but in previous seasons as well.

Also, a lot of their one-score wins have come while the team was ahead for most of the game.

In those situations, their defense goes into a bit of a “prevent” mode towards the end of games, leading to opponents coming back at the very tail end of contests.

Given those points, though, there’s definitely an element of luck as an overarching theme for the Chiefs’ season.

It would not be a surprise to see negative regression coming in the win-loss column at some point soon; maybe as early as the playoffs.
