Xavier Worthy caught a touchdown and the Chiefs then missed a two-point conversion .

with the Philadelphia Eagles still well in charge of the Super Bowl.

One little-known rule change also saw the Chiefs waste yet more time as they tried to mount an unlikely comeback.

In the biggest game of the season and trailing by 28 points.

the Chiefs would have wanted the ball back as quickly as they could.

One small problem – surprise onside kicks are now banned .

and teams are now only allowed to attempt onside kicks in the fourth quarter.

.

Ahead of the season, the NFL changed the rules on onside kicks.

Without the rule change, the Chiefs may well have tried to recover the ball.

But Kansas City had to kick long and cede possession, allowing the Eagles to burn more time.

And burn time they did – their next possession took 5:43 and ended in a field goal for the Eagles, further extending their lead.

Kansas City would go on to two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter but it was too little, too late.

They attempted an onside kick after making the score 40-22.

but the ball was recovered by Philadelphia and the game ended soon after.

Fans were united in their disdain for the rule – even those who wanted the Chiefs to lose.

One wrote: “Terrible rule. Complete overraction.

“Get rid of that, the new kickoff and QBs being allowed to slide untouched .

and it might start to resemble football again.”

Another added: “Terrible rule.”

One joked: “This is the worst rule I was unaware of, I think.”

Another said: “You should be able to announce an onside anytime you want.”

Mahomes loss proves Brady’s still the GOAT.

Patrick Mahomes shook hands with Jalen Hurts and made a quick exit from the field at the Superdome.

What was supposed to be an attempt at a historic three-peat turned into his second Super Bowl horror.

Tom Brady lost Super Bowls too – three of them.

But they were all close games and he was never routed like this.

Both of Mahomes’ Super Bowl losses have been blowouts.

In sports we often debate GOATS and have to compare generations to do so, such as MJ vs LeBron.

In this quarterback battle, Brady and his Patriots beat Mahomes’ Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game at Arrowhead Stadium.

And his Tampa Bay Buccaneers secured a thumping Super Bowl win in what was his seventh and final title.

Those two head to head wins and seven rings in total means Beady still sits pretty in the GOAT debate.

One hater wrote: “Hate the Chiefs but that rule is stupid asf.”

Referencing the recent perception that the referees have favored the Chiefs, one fan added.

“I’m surprised the refs didn’t just let them do it anyways.”

Chiefs superstar QB Patrick Mahomes laid a lot of the blame for the defeat at his own feet.

He said: “There’s no way around it.

Anytime you lose a Super Bowl, it’s the worst thing in the world.

it will stick with you the rest of your career.

“I mean these will be the two losses that will motivate me to be even better, for the rest of my career.

Because you only get so few of these [Super Bowls].

and you have to capitalise on them.

“It’s going to hurt for a while, but how can you respond from it?”
