Kansas City Chiefs are playing with fire—Patrick Mahomes needs protection now

The Kansas City Chiefs are playing a dangerous game. They have Patrick Mahomes, the best quarterback in the NFL, but they’re not protecting him.

They got away with it last season because Mahomes is Mahomes.

But the Super Bowl exposed what’s been brewing all year—the offensive line is a problem, and if they don’t fix it, they’re asking for trouble.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive line is a disaster, and Patrick Mahomes deserves better

The Chiefs have a left tackle problem. Everyone saw it in the Super Bowl.

Everyone saw it all season. They rotated four different players at the position, and none of them were good enough.

Mahomes spent the year running for his life. That can’t happen again.

Stephen A. Smith didn’t sugarcoat it on First Take.

“First of all, Patrick Mahomes. One of the primary things the Chiefs have to address is their left tackle situation.

Because you had four dudes playing that position this past season.

And then you act like you have come to the rescue of Patrick Mahomes about going out and getting Jaylon Moore, who has been a backup.

I do not know if that is the answer to the problem.”

That’s the issue. The Chiefs act like they’re fixing the problem, but they’re not.

Jaylon Moore isn’t the answer.

He’s a backup. That’s not enough.

“What I am saying is this, when you look at Patrick Mahomes whether or not they have left him down.

The number one thing they have to do for the quarterback is to protect him.

Number two what you also have to do, you got to remember, you got to get a running game.”

No protection. No real running game.

That’s a disaster waiting to happen.

Tyreek Hill’s departure didn’t just hurt the wide receiver room—it made Mahomes’ life harder.

Defenses don’t fear the deep ball like they used to.

That means more blitzes. More pressure. More hits.

“In the end when you look at the Kansas City Chiefs, Tyreek Hill walking out that door is a big deal because it was impossible to stack the deck at the line scrimmage.

Having a bona fide big-time threat like that also assists in taking the pressure off your quarterback.

It also keeps him healthy.

Those are the kind of things you have to look at.”

Smith is right.

If the Chiefs don’t take Mahomes’ protection seriously, they’re risking more than a bad season.

They’re risking their future.

The Kansas City Chiefs keep signing veteran backup QBs for one season and pretending it’s a plan

The Chiefs signed Gardner Minshew to a one-year deal.

Shocking. Another one-year backup quarterback. Same old story.

This is what Kansas City does. In 2024, they had Carson Wentz. In 2023, it was Blaine Gabbert.

Before that, Chad Henne held the role for years.

Ever since Henne retired, the Chiefs have been cycling through backup quarterbacks like they don’t really care.

Minshew’s last season with the Las Vegas Raiders wasn’t great—9 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, 2-7 as a starter.

But let’s be real, the Raiders are a mess.

The year before, he kept the Indianapolis Colts afloat when Anthony Richardson was injured.

He’s solid, but he’s not sticking around long-term.

Kansas City’s approach is clear. Get a veteran. Keep him for a season. Move on. It’s fine until it’s not. If Mahomes ever goes down for a long stretch, this lack of continuity could bite them.

Minshew fits the mold—experienced, capable, and good enough to manage a few games if needed.

But will he be around in 2026? Probably not. And the Chiefs seem fine with that.

The Kansas City Chiefs have no excuse—fix the offensive line or regret it later

Patrick Mahomes is a generational talent. But even he has limits.

The Chiefs can’t keep relying on him to cover up their flaws.

The offensive line is a problem.

The lack of a true WR1 is a problem.

The running game isn’t good enough.

They can’t afford to waste another season hoping Mahomes pulls off miracles.

He will, because he’s that good.

But eventually, the hits add up.

The pressure builds.

The body breaks down.

The Chiefs need to stop gambling with their franchise quarterback’s health.

They need to stop pretending a backup left tackle is the answer.

They need to fix the offensive line now.

Or they’ll regret it later.
