The Kansas City Chiefs survived another upset bid, this time taking down the Las Vegas Raiders by a final score of 19-17 on Black Friday.
The team’s 11th win of the season wasn’t without controversy, though.
With the Raiders in position for a potential game-winning field goal, an errant snap bounced off the shoulder of quarterback Aidan O’Connell and directly to Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton.
A flag was thrown on the play, initially for a false start, which would have blown the play dead before it started.
Instead, the officials conversed and came to the ruling that the correct penalty was an illegal motion.
which allowed the Chiefs to retain possession – the NFL later issued a statement about the call.
Chiefs players were just happy to escape with the win.
but star defensive lineman Chris Jones isn’t looking forward to the team’s future.
With three games coming up in a 10-day span – a December 15 contest against the Cleveland Browns, December 21 game against the Houston Texans.
and a Christmas Day game against the Pittsburgh Steelers – Jones thinks the team needed a later bye week.
“Hey, listen, man, this is one thing I’m doing this offseason,” Jones said, via A to Z Sports.
“I’m going to the NFLPA, especially with us having like three games in a 10-day span, that we make it mandatory to have a late bye week.
You know what I mean? Because with our schedule, it’s kind of awkward, to say the least.
We play three games in 10 days.
Then we got a Christmas game coming up four days after that, we got another game.
You know what I mean?”
“So, I think that’s a conversation to be had this offseason,” Jones continued.
“If a team has somewhat of a schedule like that, they have a mandatory late-season bye.
Like, we don’t need a Week 4 bye. Like, what are we getting a bye for.
Then, if you are counting how far we go in the previous season.
we’ve gone to the championship in the last three to four years.
It’s like we don’t need a week for a bye.
Give it to us in Week 8 or Week 10, something like that.”
When the 2024 NFL schedule was announced the league faced scrutiny for its bye weeks either being too early to too late.
while placing them inconsistently throughout the schedule.
Jones is just the latest to call out the league for its decision.
