Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes produced when his team needed him against the Carolina Panthers.

The Kansas City Chiefs scraped by the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium 30-27, and Patrick Mahomes was a big reason why.

The Chiefs seemingly had the game in hand at halftime.

leading 20-9, but after being shutout in the third quarter, Mahomes and Co. needed to get their act into gear after the Panthers drew level at 27-all late in the fourth quarter with Mahomes having a little over 1:47 and three timeouts to get points to avoid overtime.

Patrick led an eight-play, 57-yard drive, which included a monster 33-yard run that took the Chiefs’ offense from their 45-yard line to Carolina’s 22-yard line.

Mahomes revealed how the huge run helped set up the game-winning field goal by Spencer Shrader came about.

“We expected a man coverage, they got into type of match zone,” Mahomes said.

“So they covered up our routes.

I got out to the left, and at that point in the game yards were more important than getting out of bounds.

So with the three timeouts.

I tried to just cut through and.

I think it was Justin Watson, he got a great block and.

I was able to get down the field.

and get kind of fumbled out of bounds.

but I got out of bounds and so I got us in field goal range.”

While many expected the Chiefs to blow the lowly Panthers out of the water in response to their loss last week to the Buffalo Bills, Carolina hung around and made things tough in the end.

Moving to 10-1 on the season, the Chiefs are yet to play a full four quarters of top-level football.

and it took a herculean run from Mahomes to avoid getting dragged further into the mud by the Panthers.

But a win is a win, and the Chiefs rectified the loss to the Bills by taking care of business in Carolina.

they just now have two division games against the Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers up next.

And hopefully, the Chiefs won’t need Mahomes to put the Superman cape on like he did in Carolina.
