In a shocking turn of events that has sent ripples across the sports world, WNBA star Angel Reese found herself at the center of a heated controversy after a live television interview went awry. The incident, which unfolded during a prime-time broadcast on Friday night, quickly escalated when popular podcast host and commentator Joe Rogan weighed in, labeling Reese âthe disgrace of the WNBA 2025.â The fallout has sparked a fierce debate about sportsmanship, media scrutiny, and the pressures faced by young athletes in the limelight.
The Live TV Incident
The drama began during a post-game interview following the Chicago Skyâs narrow victory over the Las Vegas Aces. Reese, who has been a breakout star since her rookie season, was asked about a heated on-court exchange with Aces guard Kelsey Plum. Instead of deflecting or offering a measured response, Reese doubled down, unapologetically calling out Plum for what she described as âdirty playâ and âdisrespectful trash talk.â
âI donât care who you are or what youâve done in this league,â Reese stated, her voice steady but her demeanor clearly agitated. âIf you come at me sideways, Iâm gonna let you know about it. Iâm not here to play nice â Iâm here to win.â
The interview, broadcast live on national television, quickly went viral. Social media erupted, with fans and analysts alike debating whether Reeseâs comments were a justified defense of her competitive spirit or an example of poor sportsmanship.
Joe Roganâs Explosive Reaction
It didnât take long for the controversy to reach the ears of Joe Rogan, the influential host of âThe Joe Rogan Experience.â Known for his unfiltered takes on everything from MMA to pop culture, Rogan did not hold back during his Saturday morning episode.
âAngel Reese is a disgrace to the WNBA,â Rogan declared, his voice rising with intensity. âThis league is supposed to be about elevating womenâs sports, about showing the world the best of competition and character. Trash talk is one thing â but when you go on live TV and double down on disrespect, youâre sending the wrong message to every young athlete watching.â
Roganâs comments, as expected, immediately trended on X (formerly Twitter), with the hashtag #DisgraceOfTheWNBA climbing to the top of sports conversations. Supporters applauded Rogan for demanding higher standards, while critics accused him of unfairly targeting a young Black woman in a league that has often struggled for recognition and respect.
A Divided Response
The incident has laid bare deep divisions within the sports community. Some, like Hall of Famer Lisa Leslie, have come to Reeseâs defense, arguing that male athletes are often praised for their fiery competitiveness and trash talk.
âLetâs be real,â Leslie tweeted. âIf this was an NBA player, weâd be calling him passionate, a leader. Angel Reese is unapologetically herself, and thatâs what makes her great. Stop the double standard.â
Others, however, have sided with Rogan, insisting that Reeseâs attitude undermines the progress the WNBA has made in recent years.
âRespect for the game matters,â wrote longtime analyst Doris Burke. âYou can be competitive without crossing the line. The league is watching, and so are millions of young fans.â
The Pressure of Stardom
At just 23 years old, Angel Reese has become one of the most recognizable faces in womenâs basketball. Her journey from a standout at LSU to a franchise player for the Chicago Sky has been marked by both triumph and controversy. Known for her tenacity, athleticism, and charisma, Reese has also drawn criticism for her brash style and outspoken nature.
Sports psychologist Dr. Emily Harper notes that the intense scrutiny faced by athletes like Reese can be both a blessing and a curse.
âSocial media amplifies every word, every gesture,â Harper explains. âFor young stars, the pressure to perform â not just on the court, but in front of cameras and on social platforms â can be overwhelming. Itâs easy to forget that theyâre still learning, still growing.â
Reese Responds
As the backlash mounted, Reese took to Instagram Live to address the controversy. In a candid, unscripted video, she acknowledged the intensity of her comments but refused to apologize for her competitive edge.
âIâm not perfect, and I never claimed to be,â Reese said. âI play with my heart on my sleeve. I know there are people who want to see me fail, but Iâm not going anywhere. Iâm here for my team, my city, and everyone who believes in me.â
Her message resonated with many fans, who flooded her comments with messages of support and encouragement. Still, the debate rages on, with sports talk shows and opinion columns dissecting every angle of the incident.
Whatâs Next for Angel Reese and the WNBA?
As the Chicago Sky prepare for their next matchup, all eyes will be on Angel Reese. Will she be able to channel the controversy into a renewed focus on the court, or will the off-court drama continue to overshadow her game? The WNBA, for its part, has issued a brief statement encouraging all players to âuphold the highest standards of professionalism and respect, both on and off the court.â
In the end, the Angel Reese saga is about more than just one player or one moment. Itâs a reflection of the evolving landscape of womenâs sports â a world where passion, personality, and power collide in ways that challenge old assumptions and force us to rethink what it means to be a role model.
One thing is certain: Angel Reese isnât backing down. And neither, it seems, is the conversation sheâs sparked.

Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark is in the slump of her life. After scoring a career-best 25 points in the first half of her return game against the New York Liberty on June 1 (32 points on 7/14 three-point shooting overall) and shooting 4/6 from three against the Connecticut Sun, the Iowa product is just 1/23 from deep over her past three games.
Sports personality Skip Bayless has been one of Clarkâs biggest supporters dating back to her Iowa days. However, he chose to discuss her slump on Friday.
âIâve raved and raved and raved about her, but now Iâve got to be honest,â Bayless said. âShe is officially into a deep, deep three-point shooting slump. Itâs the worst three-point shooting stretch in WNBA history. Sheâs over three games, one for her last 23 from three. Itâs just getting hard to watch.â
Following her 0/6 performance on Tuesday, she missed the Feverâs next game against the Los Angeles Sparks on Thursday with a groin injury. Sheâll now miss Friday nightâs game against the Dallas Wings.
âLooking at Caitlinâs impact, she has plummeted to 55th of 61 qualified three-point shooters in the WNBA,â Bayless said. âSheâs at 29.5%. That is horrendously bad. She is tied for the league lead in assists per game, no surprise there. But, she is running away with the turnover lead. She actually has five more total turnovers than Angel Reese, who is second.â
Even though sheâs been in a deep struggle, Clark remains the leading vote-getter for the upcoming WNBA All-Star game. Head coach Stephanie White gave an update on her health Thursday.
âI think itâs very much a day-to-day thing with how she responds to treatment. I stay in my lane and let our strength and conditioning and our athletic training staff do what they do best. But yeah, found out late last night and weâll treat it day-to-day.â
As noted, Clark will not play in Indianaâs game against the Wings Friday night, making it two in a row. Her absences are starting to pile up for a Fever team that sits at a 7-8 record, good for ninth among all WNBA teams.
âIt just seems like great shooters donât go through these kind of prolonged slumps,â Bayless said. âEven though itâs just three games, itâs devastatingly wrong and bad. Iâm sure some of the veteran stars that have criticized her are shrugging and saying âtold you,â When they should be rooting like mad for her to snap out of her slump.â
