Big Shaq Notices a Homeless Mother with Baby Living in a Car, And What He Does Will Shock You

Shaquille O’Neal was driving home one evening after another long day of meetings, photo ops, and obligations. The city streets were quiet, and as he pulled into the parking lot of a nearby grocery store, he noticed something out of the ordinary. In the distance, a woman was pushing a row of shopping carts, struggling against their weight. Shaq, always observant, noticed she seemed tense, wearing worn-out clothes and carrying a heavy burden. As he walked closer to the store, something else caught his attention—an old car parked near the edge of the lot, with fogged-up windows. Inside, he could make out the shape of a baby carrier.
Curiosity and concern tugged at him, and instead of heading toward the store, Shaq walked toward the woman. He called out to her, his voice calm, not wanting to startle her. She froze, her eyes wide, clearly exhausted. When Shaq asked if she was okay, she quickly replied she was fine, but her voice betrayed her, and her posture stiffened. Shaq couldn’t ignore his instincts. The baby in the car and the woman’s nervous energy made him feel uneasy. He asked her about the car, and with a reluctant, defensive response, she confirmed it was hers.
When Shaq gently asked if she needed help, the woman, Emily, broke down, revealing her desperate situation. She had been living in the car with her three-month-old son, Liam, after losing her job while on maternity leave. The father of the child had left before he was born, and with no family nearby and no place to stay, Emily had been forced to live in her car. Shaq’s heart sank as he listened to her story. The cold night air and the baby’s vulnerability were too much for him to ignore.

Without hesitation, Shaq made a promise to help. He offered to get Emily and Liam someplace warm for the night, assuring her that it wasn’t charity—it was help. Emily, though hesitant and fearful, accepted. Shaq quickly arranged for a motel room for the night and made calls to gather supplies for her. When they arrived at the motel, Emily finally felt a sense of safety she hadn’t experienced in weeks. For the first time in days, she could rest, knowing her son wasn’t in danger of freezing.
In the following days, Shaq continued to support Emily. He reached out to his charitable foundation, arranging emergency housing, food assistance, medical care, and daycare for Liam. Emily, overwhelmed and unsure of whether she could trust this sudden kindness, began to see that Shaq’s intentions were genuine. He was offering not just temporary relief but a real chance for her and Liam to rebuild their lives.
Over the next few weeks, Emily’s life began to stabilize. She moved into a small apartment, helped by Shaq’s foundation, and started working again at a grocery store. Shaq kept checking in, bringing her supplies, encouraging her, and ensuring she had the support she needed to get back on her feet. Emily, still carrying the weight of her past struggles, started to believe that perhaps, just maybe, she could create a better future for herself and Liam.
One day, Shaq arrived with a surprise—a car. It wasn’t new, but it was reliable, and it meant Emily didn’t have to worry about her car breaking down on the side of the road anymore. It was a small but meaningful gesture, one that made a huge difference in her ability to take control of her life again.
As time went on, Emily grew stronger. She took night classes, determined to provide a better future for Liam. Shaq continued to be a source of encouragement, reminding her that she was capable of more than just surviving; she could thrive. And thrive she did.

A year later, Emily stood in front of a crowd at a charity event hosted by Shaq’s foundation. Her son Liam, now a toddler, sat in her lap as she shared her story. She spoke of the woman who had helped her when she thought all hope was lost, of the man who had seen her struggle and decided to do something about it. The crowd erupted in applause, but Shaq simply smiled, his heart full, knowing that Emily had found her strength.
As Emily tucked Liam into bed that night, she reflected on how far she had come. She wasn’t the same woman who had pushed shopping carts in a parking lot, hoping for spare change. She had built a life for herself and her son, not just surviving but thriving. It all started with one person who refused to look away. One act of kindness changed everything.
Through his foundation, Shaq had given Emily a chance to rebuild her life. But more than that, he had shown her the power of believing in herself. He had reminded her that no one should have to go through life’s hardest struggles alone. And in the end, that was the gift that would keep giving—because Emily promised to pay it forward, helping others the way Shaq had helped her.

Los Angeles Lakers guard Bronny James, the son of LeBron James, made his ninth NBA appearance on Jan. 7 against the Dallas Mavericks. Playing just one minute in the 21-point loss, James did not record a single stat.
Tuesday’s game was the fifth-straight scoreless appearance for James, as the rookie guard last scored an NBA basket on Nov. 6 against the Memphis Grizzlies. While James is averaging just 0.4 points, 0.1 rebounds and 0.3 assists at the NBA level, he has shown some improvement in the G League.
The South Bay Lakers play their next game on Tuesday against the Indiana Mad Ants, but James is currently with the NBA club.

While James is not currently on a G League assignment, the Lakers made an announcement on Sunday about the former USC guard’s status.
Per the team, James is questionable for Monday’s game against the San Antonio Spurs with an illness.
James has been no stranger to the injury report in his rookie year, missing multiple weeks earlier this season with a left heel contusion. It is now an illness that has the 6-foot-2 guard’s status in question.
In addition to his nine NBA games this season, James has made nine appearances at the G League level. Averaging 14.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists for South Bay, James has converted on 37.9% of his field goal attempts.
The Lakers have not announced whether or not James will travel with South Bay for its upcoming game in Indiana. He will need to be cleared from his illness before appearing in an NBA or G League game.
