Andy Reid’s Family: A History of Triumph and Tragedy
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has built a career defined by massive on-field success, but his family life has been marked by profound personal tragedy. Reid and his wife, Tammy Reid, are parents to five children: Garrett, Britt, Spencer, Drew Ann, and Crosby. Over the years, the family has publicly faced the devastating struggles of addiction and legal issues, drawing immense sympathy and support from the entire football world.

The Devastating Loss of Garrett Reid
The most painful chapter for the Reid family was the death of their eldest son, Garrett Reid, in August 2012. Garrett, who was 29 at the time, passed away from a heroin overdose while at the Philadelphia Eagles’ training camp, where he was working as an assistant to the strength and conditioning staff.
Garrett had battled a decade-long addiction to drugs, a fight his parents supported fiercely. His passing was a shocking and deeply personal blow to the family and the Philadelphia community, where Andy Reid was head coach at the time. Despite the incredible grief, Andy Reid made the difficult decision to return to coaching shortly after, a choice he later explained by saying Garrett “would have kicked me in the butt if I didn’t,” believing it was the right thing to do to honor his son’s spirit.
Britt Reid’s Crash and Legal Troubles
The family faced further turmoil with the legal issues surrounding another son, Britt Reid. A former assistant coach for the Chiefs, Britt was involved in a serious drunk driving crash in February 2021, just days before Super Bowl LV.
The crash severely injured a five-year-old girl, Ariel Young, leaving her with a traumatic brain injury that put her in a coma for 11 days. Britt Reid’s blood alcohol level was found to be over the legal limit. In 2022, he pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated, a felony, and was sentenced to three years in prison.
The legal saga was reignited in 2023 when Missouri’s governor commuted Britt Reid’s sentence, allowing him to serve the remainder under house arrest. This decision was met with immediate and significant backlash, particularly from Ariel Young’s family, who called the commutation an “injustice” and pointed to the permanent damage caused to their daughter. Britt Reid is currently scheduled to complete his sentence in October 2025.
A Family United by Faith and Football
Through the decades of highs and lows, Andy and Tammy Reid have remained steadfastly committed to their family, faith (as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), and the football community. They now have twelve grandchildren, often seen celebrating on the field with their grandfather after Chiefs victories, including their three Super Bowl triumphs.
The tragic losses and public struggles of the Reid family serve as a poignant reminder that even the most high-profile figures in professional sports are not immune to profound personal suffering. The unwavering support shown by players, colleagues, and fans over the years has highlighted the deep respect the football world holds for Andy Reid, not just as a legendary coach, but as a father who has faced the unimaginable.
The latest, unconfirmed rumor of a “tragic loss” appears to be an echo of these past, genuine tragedies. While the community’s thoughts and prayers would undoubtedly be with the Reid family should new tragedy strike, fans and media must rely on official family and team statements to respect the private nature of such heartbreaking events.
