Brittany Mahomes, co-owner of the Kansas City Current soccer team and wife of Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, took to Instagram on Thursday to recount a frightening experience she and her family endured with their eight-month-old son, Bronze. In her post, Brittany shared the details of a harrowing trip to the emergency room after they discovered that their young son has a severe peanut allergy.
“We took a very scary and frantic trip to the ER yesterday after finding out this guy is highly highly allergic to peanuts,” Brittany wrote in her post. “The scariest 30 min of my life.”
Bronze, who was born in November, is the youngest child of Brittany and Patrick, joining his two-year-old sister, Sterling, in the family. The incident has left the Mahomes family deeply shaken, but it also shed light on the serious nature of food allergies and the importance of awareness and vigilance when it comes to managing them.
In 2021, Patrick Mahomes shared in an interview with Men’s Health that he had tested positive for an allergy to most tree nuts. This personal experience with allergies has made the Mahomes family even more cautious about food-related risks, and now they are learning to navigate these challenges with their son Bronze.
Food allergies, particularly to peanuts, can be life-threatening, requiring individuals to be vigilant in avoiding exposure to their allergens. While treatments do exist to reduce the danger of inadvertent exposure, the severity of such allergies is evident in cases like Bronze’s.
A recent study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice suggests that peanut oral immunotherapy, where increasing doses of peanut protein are ingested under medical supervision, is a safe and effective treatment for infants under 12 months of age. However, for families like the Mahomes, the reality of managing severe allergic reactions can be overwhelming, especially when anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction, is a concern.

Anaphylaxis can occur rapidly after exposure to an allergen, and it can be fatal if not treated immediately. The only medication that can reverse the progression of anaphylaxis is epinephrine, and it’s highly likely that Brittany Mahomes was prescribed an epinephrine auto-injector for Bronze, which she would need to carry with her at all times. Epinephrine can stop anaphylaxis in its tracks, but it is essential that it be administered right away, and emergency medical services should always be called in such situations.
For those prescribed epinephrine, it is recommended to carry two auto-injectors wherever they go, ensuring that the first is administered immediately after the suspicion of an allergic reaction and the second is used if necessary while waiting for emergency services to arrive.
Brittany’s post not only highlighted the alarming reality of food allergies but also serves as a reminder for families with children who suffer from such allergies to take precautions and be prepared. Despite the fear they experienced, the Mahomes family’s experience has opened a crucial conversation about the need for awareness and preparedness in managing severe food allergies.
In moments like these, the Mahomes family’s experience serves as a reminder that even the strongest families can face challenges, but with love, support, and awareness, they can navigate through even the scariest situations.
Brittany Mahomes: Son Bronze’s ‘severe allergic reaction’ that led to ER visit was ‘one of the scariest experiences of my life’
Brittany Mahomes wants to raise awareness about severe food allergies in young children after her 1-year-old son, Bronze, was rushed to the hospital due to an undiscovered peanut allergy over the summer.
Mahomes called the incident “one of the scariest experiences of [her] life” and is now hoping to teach others “how to best respond” if they ever face a similar situation.
“Like all moms, my kids’ safety and happiness is my number one priority,” the 28-year-old captioned a video of her and her little ones on Instagram Wednesday.
“I recently received an outpouring of support from other moms and parents after sharing my experience with Bronze’s severe allergic reaction to peanuts.”
In the video, Brittany sat on a couch with her son, Bronze — whose full name is Patrick “Bronze” Lavon Mahomes III — and daughter Sterling Skye, almost 3, whom she shares with Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

“So I have an infant and a toddler both who have severe food allergies and I think it is very important to raise awareness of what a severe reaction may look like if it was to happen to a child,” she said in the video partnership with AUVI-Q, an epinephrine injection used to treat allergic reactions in infants and toddlers.
“Based on my experience, I can tell you that a severe reaction may not look how you think it should look,” the mother of two continued.
Although Brittany didn’t elaborate on Bronze’s exact reaction, she noted that they immediately saw their son’s pediatrician to get medication for any future incidents.

“The safety of your child is your upmost important thing when you are out and about,” she added, noting that it’s “very important to educate everyone on how to use” the injectors in case of an emergency.
The Kansas City Current co-owner revealed to her Instagram followers in August that they had to rush their youngest to the ER after learning he is “highly highly allergic to peanuts.”
“We took a very scary and frantic trip to the ER yesterday,” she captioned a photo of Bronze sipping on a bottle.
“The scariest 30 mins of my life,” she added.
