Caitlin Clark proves bold Sue Bird call right with perfect reply to ‘dream’ agony

Caitlin Clark proved Sue Bird’s bold prediction she would win Rookie of the Year correct after setting the WNBA record for most points scored by a rookie in a single season
Caitlin Clark proved Sue Bird’s WNBA Rookie of the Year call correct after the rookie’s incredible display against the Dallas Wings on Sunday.
In the Indiana Fever’s 110-109 win over the Wings, Clark poured in 35 points on 10-of-22 shooting from the field, 6 of 14 from 3-point land, eight assists and two rebounds in her 36 minutes of action. Joining her was Kelsey Mitchell, who had 30 points of her own in the win.
And while the two teammates going off for 30 points each was impressive, Clark’s showing arguably was more impressive, considering she broke yet another record. The 22-year-old now holds the record scored by a rookie in a single season, surpassing WNBA legend Simone Augustus’ record of 744 points, which was set in 2006.
As it stands, Clark has 761 points with one game remaining in the regular season. Should Clark attempt to break 800 points, she will need to score at least 39 points against the Washington Mystics, though considering the Fever already are in playoff position, it would behoove Indiana head coach Christie Sides not to overwork her star guard.
Additionally, with Clark continuing to break records and Angel Reese out for the season, the Rookie of the Year race is all but over, with Clark widely expected to take home the award. If and when Clark accepts the award, the moment will call to mind the prediction Bird made during the Olympic Break.
At the time, Reese and Clark were locked in a heated battle for the award, with the two rookie stars seemingly breaking records every night. Still, Bird made it clear who she had as her rookie of the year, stating in August: “For Rookie of the Year, I don’t really do the stat comparison. Yeah, it can help inform things when it’s tight, for sure… I just do the eye test and to me, she’s Rookie of the Year.”

That said, while Clark is having a historic season en route to her Rookie of the Year win, she was still not considered to be part of the American contingent that went to Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games. Although many metrics showed Clark deserved to play for Team USA, she ultimately was snubbed.
Rather than being disheartened by what happened, Clark used that as fuel to be a better player. “I’m excited for the girls that are on the team,” the Fever star said at the time, per ESPN. “I know it’s the most competitive team in the world and I know it could have gone either way — me being on the team or me not being on the team. I’m going to be rooting them on to win gold. I was a kid that grew up watching the Olympics, so it will be fun to watch them.
“Honestly, no disappointment. It just gives me something to work for; it’s a dream. Hopefully one day I can be there. I think it’s just a little more motivation. You remember that. Hopefully when four years comes back around, I can be there.”
Although Team USA ultimately won the gold without Clark, it appeared as if some believed the rookie should have been given a chance. Dawn Staley, a member of the selection committee, admitted that Clark would have been under “really high consideration” to make the team, if given another opportunity.
Despite the disappointment, Clark rebounded impressively, solidifying herself as the Rookie of the Year. What’s more, she will look to lead the Fever in the playoffs, a place they had not been to since 2016.
