While football has taken him to the top of the world, Norway’s World Cup hero grew up in a tiny agricultural town, and he has never let go of his rural roots.
Erling Haaland is known for scoring goals and breaking records, but away from the pitch his biggest dream is surprisingly simple. After retiring from football, he wants to leave the stadiums behind and become a farmer in Norway.
He grew up in Bryne, a small agricultural town in southwestern Norway, and the countryside has always been his escape from the pressure of being a global superstar. “Being on a farm, driving a tractor, feeding my cows. That’s my dream,” he previously told the media.
His dream isn’t just about living on a farm either. He wants to be the best at it. In a recent interview with BBC Sport, he said his goal is to become the “best farmer of the year” with both animals and vegetables.
He already has a daily routine that is influenced by his farming passion. In a video from his YouTube channel, he visited a Cheshire farm to buy fresh meat and milk for his team, praising the quality of locally produced food and the importance of animal welfare. He called milk a “superfood” and explained that he drinks it because it is good for his stomach, skin, bones, and muscles.
Off the pitch, Haaland is often pictured relaxing on a tractor or working with animals, posting about his love for the simple rural life with captions that show he is truly at home. “I think it will have a small farm when I after I retire in Bryne,” he told ESPN back in 2022.
With Norway facing England in the World Cup quarter-finals, his football career is far from over, but his retirement plan is already set.

Erling Haaland says England should be confident for their World Cup tie with Norway and says pressure is firmly on Thomas Tuchel’s men

England take on Norway in Miami on Saturday for a place in the World Cup semi-finals; Norway and Manchester City striker Erling Haaland thinks England have every reason to be confident and insists the pressure is very much on the Three Lions to win the game and qualify for the semi-finals

Erling Haaland looks ahead to the World Cup match against England, where he will be playing against players he knows from the Premier League.

Norway’s Erling Haaland says England should rightly feel confident ahead of the quarter-final clash between the two sides, insisting the pressure is firmly on Thomas Tuchel’s side to progress.

Most England fans are delighted to have avoided Brazil after Norway’s 2-1 victory over Carlo Ancelotti’s men resulted in a far easier game on paper for England – with a place in the World Cup semi-finals the reward for the winners.

Asked by Sky Sports News reporter Gary Cotterill if England fans should stay humble and avoid getting ahead of themselves, Haaland said: “I think everyone should stay humble – but they should be confident of progressing, definitely.”

Erling Haaland is set to come up against Harry Kane in the World Cup quarter-final, but who has had the better season out of the two strikers?

Asked if the felt the pressure was on England, Haaland told journalists after Norway’s training session: “I think there are some clear favourites out there.

“I think England is one of them, so I think every single one of you should put pressure on the English lads!”

Erling Haaland has seven goals in the World Cup, just one behind Lionel Messi so how do England stop him on Saturday night?

Haaland admitted that this World Cup knockout fixture will be a game with a difference, given his unique connection to England and English football.

“It’s a special game, definitely,” he said.

“I think for me it’s super special because I play in England and I’m born in England and you also play against team-mates and everything.

“So it’s a bit, not weird, but it’s a funny game and it’s going to be nice.”

Ahead of Norway against England in the World Cup, take a look at the best goals from Erling Haaland and Harry Kane’s season.

Haaland admitted he was not expecting Norway to be in the position where they are potentially 90 minutes away from a place in the last four of the World Cup.

“I definitely didn’t expect this at all,” he said.

Gary Neville previews England’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway.

“I said it plenty of times before – even before the Brazil game I didn’t expect – and I didn’t expect us to be in the quarter-finals with Norway in the World Cup. It’s quite surprising even for me.

“I enjoy so many things. First of all, just to be able to play in the World Cup is just an honour and a huge goal for me in my career.

England face the daunting task of taking on Norway and Erling Haaland in the quarter-final of the World Cup, but Thomas Tuchel’s men may just have the upper hand.

“To be able to be here and play on the biggest stage with my Norwegian friends against the best teams in the world is really special.

“Playing Brazil was kind of crazy for us Norwegians and to win against Brazil and to go and play England in the quarter-finals in the World Cup in USA is quite special.

“I think if you watch the scenes back in Norway [you can see] it’s not normal for Norway.”
