While many coaches are taking a break this summer, enjoying downtime or gearing up for the next basketball season, Lisa Bluder â the iconic former head coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes womenâs basketball team â has spent her time halfway across the world, making a difference far beyond the court.
Bluder, now retired from coaching, recently returned from a life-changing trip to rural Africa, where she witnessed an everyday struggle thatâs hard to imagine from the comfort of home: children walking miles every day to fetch clean water â if they could find it at all.
What began as a quiet humanitarian visit turned into something extraordinary.
A Coachâs Heart, A Humanitarianâs Mission
According to those close to her, Bluder was invited by a global nonprofit working to improve water access in underserved regions. The visit was supposed to be brief. But what she saw â families surviving on contaminated water, children missing school just to collect it â moved her deeply.
âShe was heartbroken,â said a local aid worker who traveled with her. âShe kept saying, âBack home, we just turn a faucet. Here, itâs a fight every day.â She couldnât walk away from that.â

A Miracle Months Later
Just a few months after returning to the U.S., Bluder quietly worked behind the scenes to fund the construction of a solar-powered clean water well in one of the villages she visited. No media announcement. No press release. No grand ceremony.
But in that village, the arrival of the well was nothing short of a miracle.
For the first time, clean water flows just steps from the homes of families who once walked several kilometers in heat and dust â often just to fill jugs with unsafe, muddy water.
Now, children spend their mornings in school instead of on dangerous water runs. Mothers can cook and clean without fear of waterborne illness. And a community once burdened by scarcity now thrives with new hope.
Changing Lives, Quietly
âShe didnât want her name on anything,â said the local project coordinator. âShe just wanted to know the well was deep enough, the water was clean, and the kids were safe. That was it.â
Bluder, known for her humility as much as her Hall of Fame coaching career, hasnât posted about the project online or spoken publicly about her role. But for the villagers, her gesture has left a lasting impact.
âWe didnât know who she was,â said a village elder. âBut now, we call her a hero. She brought water, and with it, she brought life.â
A New Chapter of Leadership
After a legendary coaching career spanning over four decades, Lisa Bluder has shifted her focus from building championship teams to building something just as meaningful: a better world.
Whether sheâs on the sideline or in the heart of a distant village, her core values remain unchanged â lead with empathy, act with courage, and lift others up.
This summer, sheâs doing exactly that â not with a whistle in her hand, but with clean water flowing beneath her feet.
âWater is something we take for granted â until we donât have it,â Bluder reportedly said. âThis is the least I could do.â
