WNBA Rivalry vs Angel Reese on Hold in Caitlin Clark’s Strong Message to the Indiana Community

Just two games into the new WNBA season, we already got our first major headline of the season –and, just like last year, it had all to do with Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. Of course, it had to be these two stars!  A hard foul by Clark on Reese in the third quarter of the season opener ignited tensions, sparking a fire that quickly caught attention. What followed was serious enough for the WNBA to step in and launch an official investigation.

It all began with a battle for the rebound. Angel Reese grabbed the offensive board, strong and steady. Then came Caitlin Clark, who swiped hard at Reese’s arm. The ball flew loose. Reese hit the floor. The refs didn’t hesitate—they upgraded Clark’s third personal foul to a flagrant. That was the spark. What followed was a whirlwind that revealed the harsh reality athletes still face today. Angel Reese was hit with hateful comments from fans.

When the officials checked the monitor and showed Reese sitting on the sidelines, the crowd made their feelings clear. No cheers. No respect. Just loud, echoing boos. And when Clark was called for the flagrant-1? The noise got even louder. Reese stepped to the line for two shots. The first miss–and the arena exploded in cheers. But when she made the second, the crowd flipped again. Back to boos. It is now believed that during this ordeal, Reese was subjected to racist remarks from fans. This led the WNBA to launch a thorough investigation into the allegations.

Caitlin Clark has had her say about the investigation as well. She said, “Yeah, there’s no place for that(hate) in our game, there’s no place for that in society,” Clark said. “We want every person that comes into our arena, whether player, whether fan, to have a great experience. I appreciate the league doing that. I appreciate the Fever organization has been at the forefront of that since really day one… Hopefully, the investigation, we will leave that to them to find anything and take the proper action if so.”

It’s normal for home fans to try and rattle the opposition—that’s part of the game. At Gainbridge Fieldhouse, they were probably doing just that. So far, videos circulating on social media don’t show any clear evidence of racial sl-rs aimed at Angel Reese. But if any did happen, it would be unfair for those responsible to avoid punishment. No one should have to face racial ab-se.

While much has been said about the incident between the two stars, what’s really grabbed attention is Clark’s performance against the Sky to kick off their new season.

Caitlin Clark shines in season opener

It was a night to remember for Fever fans, no matter the drama between the Iowa and LSU superstars. The Fever crushed the Sky 93-58, with Clark putting on a fantastic performance.

Clark finished with her third triple-double of her young WNBA career, putting up 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. Her red-hot play has already made her second in WNBA history for the most 20-point, 10-assist games—just behind Courtney Vandersloot– who has played in 431 games as opposed to Clark’s 41!

Reese, meanwhile, kicked off her second season with a strong double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. She also became the fastest player to reach 450 points and 450 rebounds. Both of these superstars keep breaking records every game. While it’s unfair to compare them directly, it’s clear that each is an incredible player in her own right– and it’s time fans appreciate that.
