The San Francisco Giants had at least one offseason signing work out.
The San Francisco Giants made a couple of big moves this offseason and are now waiting to see if they pay off.
They’re off to a 7-11 start, though, after Tuesday’s loss to the Miami Marlins. Questions are arising about the roster, but some pre-existing ones are being answered.
The Giants signed right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks to a four-year, $44 million contract this offseason. He’s been a solid pitcher, the questioning move was brining him into the starting lineup after spending his first five seasons in Major League Baseball as a reliever.
A lot of this season has been spent trying to figure out if it would be a good move or not? Would he end up back in the minor leagues?
As each appearance comes and goes with him having solid outings, people can start to breathe a little bit more. San Francisco did lose his most recent start, but he gave up just two runs in five innings of work. It’s not a perfect outing, but it is more than enough.
He did start eight games back in 2022, but mostly in a rotational role. He had one start reach five innings pitched and he gave up three runs.
In 2024, though, he has an ERA of 1.57. His whiff has not seen any drop off as a starter and is infact on a better pace than ever as a starter. His advanced stats/fielding independent stats haven’t been updated for Tuesday’s game, but have been somewhat on pace with the rest of his career.
Even if he regresses a bit from his current spot as one of the best starting pitchers in baseball, he would still be more than worthy of the contract that he signed.
He looks more than cut out to be a starting pitcher, so the Giants can put this signing in the win column for now.
