Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese have emerged as standout WNBA players in their inaugural seasons, leading to discourse surrounding the league’s Rookie of the Year award. But while basketball fans argue over which rookie is better, the league has benefitted equally from their fanbases carried over from college.

The 22-year-old WNBA No. 1 overall pick has been a workhorse for the Indiana Fever, playing and starting in all 34 games this season. She’s averaged 35.5 minutes per game and played every second in the team’s recent 93-86 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks, where she tied the team in leading scoring with Aliyah Boston, each at 24 points.

While Clark built a name from her 3-point shooting at Iowa, she has since expanded her game as a scoring machine, pace conductor, and the engine that’s kept the Fever running. Clark carried her touch from beyond the arc to the pro level, making three 3-pointers per game on 34 percent shooting from deep.

Despite her high scoring, Clark is more than just a shooter. After losing eight of the season’s first nine games, she became a complete player, averaging 5.4 rebounds per game. Her playmaking abilities are evident in her 5.8 assists per game, continuing to build on a developing synergy with Boston.

Although she commits 5.5 turnovers per game, the trade-off is worth the risk to Fever fans who have praised her aggressive playing style online. Clark averages 18.9 points per game, cementing her status as one of the league’s premier scorers. While Clark has built her status with finesse, Reese has built a reputation of grit and determination on the glass. She’s become the heartbeat of the Chicago Sky’s interior presence and leads her team with 13.2 rebounds per game, 8.1 of those being offensive glass.

While she may not score as prolifically as Clark from a distance, Reese is averaging a double-double with 13.3 points per game on 38 percent shooting from the field. Her ability to secure second-chance opportunities has caused polarizing responses from viewers, primarily regarding her shooting percentages in the paint.
