In a strong showing, rookie Keaton Winn pitched six solid innings, allowing just one run as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Marlins 3-1 on Wednesday afternoon. It marked their first series win in Miami since 2016.
Winn (1-3) gave up four hits and struck out four batters. Thairo Estrada contributed with two hits and scored the decisive run in the seventh inning, crossing home plate on a double-play grounder by Nick Ahmed against reliever Declan Cronin (0-2).
“It feels good to finally get that first win,” said Winn. “I tried not to dwell on it, but I knew it would come eventually.”
Jorge Soler and Jung Hoo Lee also had two hits each and scored a run for the Giants. Matt Chapman added an RBI double in the eighth inning. Despite grounding into two double plays, the Marlins fell to a league-worst 4-15 record in the NL.
“These guys are putting in the effort and fighting hard, but the wins just aren’t coming,” Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said. “That’s the most frustrating part.”
Miami’s Bryan De La Cruz tied the game at 1-all with a solo home run in the sixth inning after Winn took a hard comebacker to his left foot from Luis Arraez. Despite feeling some initial discomfort, Winn remained in the game and gave up the homer on a 2-1 sinker.
“I felt it initially, but once I stood up and put weight on it, it was fine,” Winn said. “I wanted to stay in as long as possible, especially with two outs.”
Winn’s outing concluded after Giants catcher Patrick Bailey threw out Jazz Chisholm Jr. attempting to steal second base to end the sixth inning.
“We needed some quality innings today with several guys down,” said Giants manager Bob Melvin. “He pitched a fantastic game when we needed it most.”
Erik Miller took over for Winn and pitched a flawless seventh inning, while Tyler Rogers handled the eighth. Camilo Doval secured his third save with a scoreless ninth inning.
“It’s always important to finish a series and road trip with a win,” Estrada said in Spanish. “Hopefully, this momentum carries us into a successful stretch when we return home.”
