For Burgos, he is returning to the Giants organization after pitching in the minors with them last season. The lefty pitcher signed a similar contract last offseason after spending the first four seasons as a pro in the Cleveland Guardians organization.
The 25-year-old worked primarily as a starter in the lower minors but has moved to the bullpen as he has climbed the minor league ladder. Overall, he has posted a 3.13 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 9.3 K/9, and a 2.98 SO/W ratio across five minor league seasons.
This includes a solid 2023 campaign in which he tallied a 3.38 ERA with 54 strikeouts against 25 walks in 58.2 frames split between Double-A and Triple-A. Interestingly, he recorded one scoreless appearance with Guerreros de Oaxaca of the Mexican League before being released earlier this month. That was likely so he could pursue an opportunity with San Francisco.
Burgos flashes a mid-90’s fastball with a changeup and a curveball. The fastball gets in quickly on left-handed hitters due in part to a low, three-quarters arm slot, but the changeup is his best pitch as it has late, fading action.
On the other hand, Cody joins the Giants after spending his entire professional career with the Texas Rangers before this. He was originally a sixth-round pick by the club in the 2016 draft out of the University of Kentucky.
The right-handed hurler has a solid 3.88 ERA across five minor league seasons. He did pitch briefly with the Rangers in 2020 and 2021. During that time, he registered a 3.71 ERA across 34 innings.
On the mound, Cody has a starter’s pitch mix that consists of a mid-90’s four-seam fastball, slider, changeup, and a sinker. The slider and four-seam fastball have become his primary pitches out of the bullpen, but he is capable of throwing any pitch in any count.
Cody had been with an independent team before joining San Francisco. Both Burgos and Cody have been assigned to the ACL Giants, so it is possible that they are not fully ramped up yet. When they are, they should provide veteran depth in the upper minors.
