Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs won their 14th game of the season in a 27-19 win over the Houston Texans on Saturday afternoon. Throughout the game though, there were some questions as to whether the officiating crew was favoring the reigning Super Bowl champions.
Jason Whitlock, who is a self-proclaimed Kansas City Chiefs fan, shared his thoughts about the officials in a post on X on Saturday afternoon. Whitlock said that even though he is a fan of Kansas City, he was shocked and even ’embarrassed’ by the calls the officials made against Houston.
“I’m a Chiefs fan. This officiating is hard to watch. It’s embarrassing. It’s criminal what’s happening to the Texans,” Jason Whitlock wrote on X.
Some calls in question occurred in the first half of the game as Kansas City took a 17-10 lead over Houston. Texans’ wide receiver Tank Dell was called for an offensive pass interference penalty and cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. was penalized for holding on DeAndre Hopkins. The play would have resulted in a sack on Patrick Mahomes, however, the holding penalty took the sack away.
The Kansas City Chiefs are nearing the number one overall seed and home-field advantage in the AFC and could have that locked up by next week.
Kansas City Chiefs’ ball boy spotted helping team call a timeout
With just about six minutes remaining in the first half of Saturday’s game, the Kansas City Chiefs trailed the Houston Texans 10-7. Kansas City had a first and 10 on Houston’s 18-yard line as the play clock continued to wind down.
The live broadcast then showed a ball boy, who was standing on the Kansas City’s sideline, tap the referee on the shoulder and a timeout was handed to the home team. Typically, coach Andy Reid would be the one to get the official’s attention to call a timeout or even quarterback Patrick Mahomes could do so on the field.
The ball boy could have been helping Andy Reid get the attention of the referee but, that’s not something that typically happens either. With the criticism of the back-to-back Super Bowl champions getting calls in their favor, having the ball boy possibly call the timeout doesn’t look great for the AFC West division winners.
The NFL hasn’t indicated whether Kansas City violated an NFL rule with the ball boy’s actions.
