“That’s when he’s really good,” said Giants manager Bob Melvin. “He’s not all about getting strikeouts. He focuses on getting hitters out early in the count, and that’s what we saw for most of the game. I’m just happy to have him on our team.”

Webb said, “It felt really good. I feel like me and (catcher Patrick Bailey) is getting really dialed in with the sequences and what we’re trying to do. It’s been fun working with him. And also, the defense played unbelievable.”

Mike Yastrzemski, Thairo Estrada, and Michael Conforto each got two hits for San Francisco. Yastrzemski got three RBIs, and Estrada and LaMonte Wade Jr. got the other runs.

Starling Marte got three hits for New York, but the team lost its third game in a row after winning six in a row.

“Just continue to go out there with the same energy, same focus,” said Marte through a translator. “We know that we’re playing teams that are also trying to win games, so we have to go out there and do our best and try to get the results.”

Mets starter Luis Severino didn’t let a run in until the fifth inning, but then Conforto and Matt Chapman got hits. Estrada drove in the game’s first run with a single to left field. Yastrzemski’s single brought in two more runs, and the Giants led 3-0.

Severino gave up three runs and five hits in six innings, striking out five batters.

Estrada started the seventh inning with a triple and scored on a single by Yastrzemski. Wade added another run with a double, making the score 5-0.

New York tried to come back in the ninth inning against Giants reliever Tyler Rogers, but they only scored one run. Camilo Doval came in and got the last two outs for his fourth save.
