Oilers Icon Paul Coffey Gets Emotional, Makes Guarantee on Connor McDavid in Interview

Oilers May Be Forced to to Make Decision on Ty Emberson’s Future this Trade Deadline

The Edmonton Oilers are getting some fantastic contributions from young defenceman Ty Emberson, and now may be coming up on a decision on his future.

The Oilers acquired Emberson in trade this summer from the San Jose Sharks for Cody Ceci, and Emberson only had 30 games of NHL experience.

After a bit of a rocky start with his new team, Emberson has begun to really settle in as of late, and has been moved up to the second pair with Mattias Ekholm.

Some Oilers fans believe that the team should pursue a contract with Emberson now, and get him signed to a contract with term to lock him up at a lower salary value – with only 60 games of experience, he can’t demand much.

However, according to Oilers analyst Alan Mitchell in a recent piece for the Athletic, other teams will be asking about Emberson in trade, especially if the Oilers are targeting a veteran blueliner.

“It’s also possible the club moves [Emberson] at the deadline for a more substantial player. A team like the Columbus Blue Jacketsmight be willing to offload a veteran, say Ivan Provorov, and Emberson might be part of the ask.”- Alan Mitchell, the Athletic

Stan Bowman may be forced into a decision to trade him for help now, or lock him up for years to come.

Emberson was picked to be a potential breakout player this season, and while e may not quickly have evolved into a star player, he’s shown himself to be a surprisingly reliable player for a defender with only 60 games played.

The 24 year old defenceman is playing solid defensively, a big role on their improved penalty kill, is able to be a physical presence, and can make a good first pass. With more coaching from Paul Coffey, Emberson could develop into a great player.

Team may ask about his availability in trade that he deadline, but instead, the Oilers should be pursuing a contract extension with Ty Emberson.

If the Oilers can get him under contract for 3 years under $2M with the rising salary cap, they should take the deal. Hopefully, Stan Bowman can find a way to get pen to paper.
