Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese received a 4th place vote in the WNBA MVP voting

The WNBA MVP for the 2024 season has been finalized. Las Vegas Aces superstar A’ja Wilson was unanimously selected for her third award after a record-breaking season. It could have been her third straight and 4th MVP if one voter did not give her a 4th place vote last season. This time, another player, Angel Reese received a controversial 4th place vote. Once fans received information about that, they went wild on social media.

When the WNBA published their MVP voting results, fans were ecstatic that this time, Wilson was not undone in her quest for greatness. But on the other hand, in the list of players receiving MVP votes was Chicago Sky rookie Reese.

The forward no doubt had a season for the ages. Her consistent double-doubles, elite rebounding and ability to square up against the best of the best won her praise. Her records complemented those performances.

Ultimately A’ja Wilson overtook her in the single season rebounding record, a remarkable feat for a rookie whom once analysts thought did not bring a solid game to the WNBA. But even then, it does not account for the 4th place votes, as how their respective teams place in the standings plays a major part in the voting.

She was no doubt one of the best players on the Chicago Sky. But her game did not result in the Sky finishing in a playoff position. Some might argue her season-ending injury was to blame. But in her last 10 games before the injury, Chicago Sky went 2-8. With both wins coming against the league worst Los Angeles Sparks, that record was alarming.

Fans question MVP voting after Angel Reese gets 4th place vote

That run of games was an indication that the Chicago Sky needed more than what Angel Reese was producing on the court. Fans also remembered that this record was a result of their leading scorer leaving the team. Hence, with the team struggling, fans were quick to question the validity of that 4th place vote, as an MVP vote goes to a player whose efforts have helped her team win games.

With the narratives floating around the league, fans questioned if that should factor in the WNBA MVP voting. They feel other deserving players should have been the recipient of that vote. Check out these and other comments they made on social media below:

Next season Angel Reese might come back better and lead her team to the playoffs. At that time, it will be justifiable if she is a constant name in the MVP race.
