Police have launched an urgent manhunt for the gunman who shot conservative influencer Charlie Kirk at his event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.

Kirk was shot in the neck as he began a Q&A with students at the event, with footage sweeping social media showing the commentator falling limp as he was struck.

As chaos took over the scene, an elderly man was seen being hauled away by cops while furious witnesses screamed and hurled abuse at him.

‘How dare you, you f***ing monster!’ one yelled as the man was walked away with his trousers down. The arrest came at the same time that officials said a suspect had been taken into custody, however university spokesperson Scott Trotter later said that the man in the video was not believed to be the shooter.

Reports suggest that the man was heard remarking on the shooting as he was arrested, and separate footage of the moment showed the elderly man repeatedly urging the crowd to ‘shoot him.’

The gunman remains at large, Trotter said, and UVU locked down its campus as bedlam took over the scene.  A large law enforcement presence could be seen descending on the Utah school.

UVU officials said the shot was fired from the top of the Losee Center, about 200 feet away from where Kirk was sitting. Students at UVU were offered police escorts as the manhunt for the gunman continued.

Hours after the horrific shooting, President Trump confirmed that Kirk had died, saying he was ‘loved and admired’ in the political world.

‘Melania and my sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika and family, Charlie we love you,’ he wrote.
