As the Kansas City Chiefs entered the offseason, one glaring issue had to be addressed, and it was one that played a big role in the team’s downfall in the Super Bowl – the offensive line.
General manager Brett Veach went about his business and signed Jaylon Moore in free agency to a two-year deal, and then doubled down with the drafting of Josh Simmons in the first round.
Also, Kingsley Suamataia is going to shift from left tackle to left guard as a replacement for the departed Joe Thuney, so there will be a lot of moving parts for Patrick Mahomes to deal with.
And as OTAs and minicamp have come and gone with some good progression, Patrick knows that the true test of his new O-line is coming next month.
“It takes reps,” Mahomes said. “I think Coach [Andy] Heck does a great job of putting guys in different spots. Getting JT [Jawaan Taylor] back as well, you got guys bouncing around from right tackle to left tackle to go along with those three or four guys in the middle.
“It’s just going to take more reps of learning what they do, they learn me, but that’s why we get those long drive drills in training camp, you learn those guys and whenever guys are tired and what they’re really going to do. I thought we did a great job this first little set here in OTAs and in minicamp, but it’ll be the ultimate test in training camp of getting on the same page with those guys.”

Often called the “underwear Olympics” due to the nature of practice and there being limited physical contact, defenses can’t get after the offense at this time of year.
But they can at training camp.
With pads on and going against Steve Spagnuolo’s defense, Moore and Simmons are going to get a serious taste of Spags’ magic, which he often dials up in the biggest moments to great effect.
So, while Moore and Simmons have started the offseason positively, training camp looms as the pair’s sink or swim moment.
