The Kansas City Chiefs handled some serious business this morning, agreeing to a four-year, $94,000,000 contract with veteran offensive lineman Trey Smith.
A former Tennessee Volunteer, Smith entered the league as a sixth-round pick of the Chiefs in the 2021 NFL draft.
After Smith played through the duration of his rookie contract, Kansas City’s front office decided to use the Chiefs’ franchise tag on him to ensure that he didn’t seek greener pastures in free agency.
The news that Smith would sign a record-breaking extension to stay in Kansas City seems to have left Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes speechless.
Take a look at (what seems to be) Mahomes’ reaction to Smith’s signing:
Smith has been one of Kansas City’s most valuable blockers over the last few years and will need to elevate his game next season after the Chiefs traded his running-mate — veteran guard Joe Thuney — earlier this year.
Though the composition of Kansas City’s front-five may evolve over the course of Chiefs Training Camp and the preseason, Smith is expected to pair with star center Creed Humphrey to form two-thirds of the team’s offensive interior in 2025.
