“I Locked Eyes With Him”: Teaching Assistant Recalls Moment Alleged Brown University Shooter Entered Classroom

A teaching assistant at Brown University has described a chilling moment of eye contact with the alleged gunman who entered a classroom during a campus shooting, recalling seconds she says will remain with her forever.

According to the teaching assistant, the incident unfolded during a routine class session when the door suddenly opened and an unfamiliar man stepped inside. At first, she thought he might be a late student or someone who had entered the wrong room. That assumption vanished almost instantly.

“I locked eyes with him,” she said in an interview, her voice still unsteady. “The room felt like it stopped breathing. In that moment, I knew something was terribly wrong.”

She recalled that the man scanned the room quickly, his presence immediately shifting the atmosphere from ordinary to terrifying. Students froze in their seats, unsure of what they were witnessing, while the teaching assistant instinctively moved to place herself between the intruder and the students nearest the door.

Within moments, chaos erupted as the suspect fled the classroom and gunfire was reported elsewhere on campus. University officials later confirmed that law enforcement responded swiftly, securing the area and apprehending the suspect. No students in the classroom were physically injured, though many were left deeply shaken.

The teaching assistant said the emotional impact has been overwhelming. “I keep replaying that look in my head,” she said. “You don’t expect something like that to happen in a place dedicated to learning. It changes how safe you feel in spaces that once felt familiar.”

Brown University canceled classes for the remainder of the day and provided counseling services to students, faculty, and staff. In a statement, university leadership thanked first responders for their rapid action and praised campus members for following safety protocols.

Students who were in the room described the teaching assistant’s calm demeanor as critical in those tense moments. “She didn’t panic,” one student said. “That helped us stay focused and get out safely when we were told to.”
