Florida Family Tragedy Leaves One Dead, One Critically Injured After Domestic Dispute
A tragic domestic incident in Highland City, Florida, has left a family devastated just days before Christmas, following a violent dispute that began during an NFL game.
According to local authorities, 47-year-old Jason Kenny fatally shot his wife, Crystal Kenny, late in the evening after an argument inside their home. The dispute reportedly started near the end of a football game when Crystal suggested changing the television program. The argument quickly escalated.

Fearing for their safety, Crystal instructed her 12-year-old son to seek help. The child ran to a neighbor’s home to call 911. As he fled the house, he reportedly heard a gunshot.
Deputies arrived at the scene within minutes and discovered Crystal Kenny deceased. Inside a bedroom, officers found Crystal’s 13-year-old daughter, who had also been shot. The child was rushed to Lakeland Regional Health, where she remains in critical but stable condition and is alert and responsive. Authorities described her survival as “nothing short of a miracle.”
The couple’s one-year-old child was found unharmed in a crib.

After the shooting, Jason Kenny fled the scene before deputies arrived. Authorities later confirmed that he contacted his sister, stating that he had done something “very bad” and would not be going to jail. Law enforcement tracked him to his late father’s property, where he was believed to be staying.
As deputies established a perimeter and attempted to make contact, a single gunshot was heard. Jason Kenny was later found deceased at the scene.
Investigators revealed that a handwritten note from Crystal Kenny was found inside the home. In the note, she reportedly expressed concern about Jason’s drinking and substance use and urged him to seek help. The note was undated, and it remains unclear when it was written. Authorities emphasized that the investigation is ongoing.
Officials stated there had been no prior domestic violence calls to the residence and no known criminal history involving Jason Kenny. However, family members later indicated there had been past concerns about ongoing domestic issues.
The surviving children are currently in the care of relatives, while Florida’s Department of Children and Families works to determine long-term arrangements.
Law enforcement officials described the scene as especially heartbreaking, noting that the home had been decorated for Christmas, with presents under the tree — signs of a holiday that was never meant to end in tragedy.
Authorities used the incident to urge families to seek help during times of crisis, particularly during the holidays when stress, depression, and substance abuse can intensify.

“There is always help available,” officials said. “No argument should ever end in violence. If you or someone you love is struggling, reach out before it’s too late.”
The investigation remains ongoing.
