Investigators say Nick Reiner was located with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service, who reportedly spotted him smoking near a Metro station at the intersection of Vermont Avenue and Exposition Boulevard—approximately 15 miles from his parents’ Brentwood home. Police noted that Reiner did not appear to have a vehicle and may have traveled by public transportation.

During a press conference, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman formally announced the charges against Reiner, confirming he is facing two counts of first-degree murder. Authorities also confirmed that the alleged murder weapon was a knife.

“These charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, or the death penalty,” prosecutors stated.

Investigators revealed that the night before the murders, Nick Reiner—who had reportedly been living intermittently in his parents’ guest house—attended a holiday party with them at the home of late-night host Conan O’Brien in Pacific Palisades. Sources told NBC News that Reiner was disruptive at the event, repeatedly interrupting conversations, including one involving actor Bill Maher. The behavior allegedly escalated into a loud argument between Nick and his parents.

Reiner has previously spoken publicly about his struggles with addiction. In a 2016 interview with Access Hollywood, he admitted to a long history of substance abuse, including 18 stints in rehab. At the time, he was promoting Being Charlie, a film loosely based on his life and addiction struggles, which he co-wrote and which was directed by his father.

“It was more than drugs,” Reiner said in the interview. “It’s really always about more than that.”

According to investigators, at approximately 4:00 a.m. Sunday, Nick Reiner checked into the Pieride Santa Monica Hotel, located about five miles from his parents’ home. Eyewitnesses later told TMZ that he appeared agitated and erratic, though reportedly showed no visible signs of a physical altercation at that time.

Authorities believe that after checking into the hotel, Reiner allegedly returned to his parents’ home to commit the murders. TMZ reports that later Sunday morning, hotel housekeeping staff discovered blood in Reiner’s shower and bloodstains on the bed.

Rob and Michelle Reiner were found stabbed to death shortly after 3:00 p.m. Sunday. The gruesome discovery was reportedly made by their younger daughter, Romy Reiner, who immediately contacted emergency services.

After calling for help, Romy reportedly reached out to close family friends, including actor Billy Crystal and his wife, Janice. The couple was seen arriving at the home later that evening and leaving visibly shaken, wiping away tears.

As the investigation continues, authorities say more details will be released in the coming days. Meanwhile, the shocking case has sent ripples through Hollywood, leaving friends, colleagues, and fans struggling to comprehend the violent loss of one of the industry’s most respected figures and his wife.
