‘Sister Wives’: Christine Brown Reveals She and Her Ex-Husband Kody Brown Are Blood Relatives
In a shocking revelation on TLC’s Sister Wives, Christine Brown revealed that she is actually related to her ex-husband, Kody Brown.
In the December 28th episode, Christine shared with her current husband, David, that she and Kody are blood relatives. Christine explained that when she was young, she knew she would have to marry a “convert” because she was related to many people in her religious community. However, even after marrying a convert, she was still… related to him.
Christine quickly clarified that this relationship is perfectly legal, as she and Kody are third cousins, separated by one generation. She also emphasized that while polygamy is illegal, such a distant blood relationship does not violate the law.
Janelle Brown, another of Kody’s ex-wives, said this is quite common in polygamous families. She said people often joke that Christine and Kody are cousins, but in reality, the relationship is so distant that it’s almost insignificant. According to Janelle, in small polygamous communities, such overlapping kinship is quite frequent.
This revelation comes as the current season chronicles Kody Brown’s “apology journey,” as he apologizes to his ex-wives Meri, Janelle, and Christine. In an interview with Access Hollywood before the season aired, Kody said the apologies stemmed from a desire for healing after years of pain, anger, and hurt.
He shared that a profound personal experience led him to want to “burn away his old self” and begin a new era of repentance, forgiveness, and reconciliation—not only with his ex-wives, but also with himself, his family, and his faith.
