Hungry, Not Sad: Keanu Reeves Finally Explains the Viral ‘Sad Keanu’ Photo

In a recent interview with Stephen Colbert, Keanu Reeves shared intriguing insights about his acting career, his new project, and especially the famous “Sad Keanu” meme associated with his image.

Stephen began the conversation by recalling the characters Keanu has reprised in new installments of series like Bill and Ted, John Wick, and The Matrix. When asked if there was any character he wanted to play again but no one had asked him to, Keanu didn’t hesitate to reveal: “I would love to play John Constantine again in Constantine.” He humorously added that he had tried to make that movie happen but hasn’t succeeded yet, which made the audience laugh.

When Stephen offered to play a reluctant demon who doesn’t want to mess with John Constantine if the movie got made, Keanu quickly responded, “That’s his nature!” His friendly and witty demeanor made the interview feel warm and enjoyable.

Keanu then proudly talked about his new project — a comic book series titled Berserker. He explained it’s a 12-issue series about a character who is half-human, half-god, cursed with a compulsion for violence and immortality. Particularly notable was a comic panel featuring the character sitting in a pose identical to the viral “Sad Keanu” photo, which brought applause from the audience.

When Stephen asked about the real feeling behind the “Sad Keanu” meme photo, Keanu laughed and said, “I was just eating a sandwich! I wasn’t sad, just thinking and… hungry.” He explained that the artist Ron Garney, who illustrates Berserker, drew inspiration from that moment and included it in the comic as a meta, humorous detail.

Towards the end of the interview, Stephen asked why Keanu thinks he has become such a meme sensation online, with so many memes made about him. Keanu honestly replied, “I have no clue.” Stephen suggested that it might be because of Keanu’s distinctive character and approachable nature that people enjoy memeing him. Keanu then cheerfully sang a few lines from the song “Lean on Me,” playfully responding to the audience’s love and empathy.
