Def deep enough, but I doubt she’ll be out the whole season.

Dawn Staley on South Carolina women’s basketball guard MiLaysia Fulwiley’s ankle injury

South Carolina women’s basketball sophomore MiLaysia Fulwiley left the court during the Gamecocks’ exhibition game Tuesday night against Memphis, with an ankle injury.

Fulwiley appeared to land awkwardly while running back on defense late in the third quarter, causing her foot to roll. She had trouble putting weight on her foot. Teammates tried to help her back up to her feet, but she was eventually able to walk to the bench with help from trainer Craig Oates.

She returned to the bench, sat with her team and stood up on both feet during a timeout with seven minutes left.

Fulwiley had 10 points on 3-of-8 from the field.

South Carolina coach Dawn Staley spoke with media following the 106-63 win over Memphis, and gave context to Fulwiley’s injury.

“She’s alright, I think she twisted her ankle a little bit,” Staley said. “Sometimes with players like that, they’ve never been hurt, when they get hurt it scares them more than anything.

And she’s a pretty shy individual. So when she gets hurt, all eyes are on her forever. And she doesn’t like when people are looking at her, not in that way. She loves when they’re looking at her when she’s showcasing her generational talent, but not in that fashion.”

South Carolina has one exhibition game left, Oct. 28 against Clayton State, before its season opener against Michigan on Nov. 4 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

MiLaysia Fulwiley stats

In her rookie season, she averaged 11.7 points and shot 43.8% from the field.

Who is behind MiLaysia Fulwiley on the depth chart?

Fulwiley was the first sub off the bench Tuesday, replacing Bree Hall. Senior guards Te-Hina Paopao, Hall, and junior guard Raven Johnson started for South Carolina last season, and started against Memphis. The Gamecocks are loaded at the guard position, as they have sophomores Fulwiley and Tessa Johnson behind their three starters, and will have freshman Maddy McDaniel this season as well.
