Looks like the last of the McCaffery family and Iowa tales are finally here. With Fran having taken the basketball reins for the Hawkeyes 15 years ago, it had pretty much become the hub for the McCafferys.
But one year was all it took to watch that crumble a piece at a time. Now, looks like the last of them is putting a lid on it, and with a seeming jab at the city. The eldest of the siblings, and Caitlin Clark’s boyfriend, Connor, couldn’t resist giving that a nod.
Fran and Margaret’s only daughter is graduating from the University of Iowa! She shared a post in celebration, surrounded by friends, and a champagne bottle popped. But it was the caption that caught the eyes. “The past 15 years in Iowa City couldn’t have ended worse so, thanks Iowa!” Marit McCaffery wrote.

Connor wasn’t letting that just slip away. “OG comment,” he nodded.
The furore began in Iowa City, where Fran McCaffery, father of Connor and Marit, was removed from Iowa’s head coaching position on March 4. The game against Illinois was his final game with the team, where Caitlin and Connor were present to show their support. Fran leaves as the program’s all-time wins leader (297), but never once reached the Sweet 16 under his watch.
Though his departure was confirmed, following a poor season, leaving the team after 15 years hit the family hard.
Brother of Caitlin Clark’s Boyfriend Accepts Being the Ultimate Third Wheel
As Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark and boyfriend Connor McCaffery marked two years together, someone else made headlines for joining in on their love story.
Connor McCaffery shared a heartfelt Instagram post to celebrate his second anniversary with Clark.
The assistant basketball coach at Butler University posted a photo of the couple holding hands with a simple message.
“Two years. Keep being u,” he captioned.
But Connor McCaffery’s younger brother, Patrick McCaffery, added a humorous twist to the occasion.
“Two years of third wheeling with a lifetime to go,” Patrick McCaffery commented, in response to his brother’s anniversary post.
Fans quickly picked up on the joke, reacting to the Butler Bulldogs forward’s comment as both funny and relatable.
Clark, who rose to fame as a standout guard for the Iowa Hawkeyes before being selected No. 1 overall in the WNBA Draft, also responded to Connor McCaffery’s post.
“Love you,” she wrote, along with a red heart emoji.
The couple began dating in April 2023 during their time as student-athletes at the University of Iowa, per PEOPLE. Clark was breaking scoring records while leading Iowa to back-to-back national championship appearances, while Connor McCaffery played both basketball and baseball for the Hawkeyes.

Though they only went public with their relationship after five months of dating, Clark and Connor McCaffery have since become one of sports’ most admired young couples.
Even as Clark prepares for her second season in the WNBA, it’s clear she and the McCafferys are keeping things fun off the court. Whether it’s game day or anniversary day, there might always be a third wheel—but at least he has a great sense of humor.
