John Salley’s Transition from NBA Star to Hollywood Actor with a ‘Bad Boys’ Anecdote
John Salley, a four-time NBA champion and former Detroit Pistons “Bad Boy,” made waves not just on the basketball court but also in Hollywood.
He joined the cast of the Bad Boys film franchise alongside Martin Lawrence and Will Smith, playing the role of Fletcher. However, his first day on set nearly caused a rift with Lawrence.
A Risky Joke with Martin Lawrence
During an appearance on Byron Scott’s Fast Break podcast, Salley shared a humorous yet risky moment from the Bad Boys set.
While visiting Lawrence, who was with his fiancée Pat, Salley jokingly asked if Lawrence had a prenuptial agreement—right in front of everyone.
“I go down to see him. Martin is sitting there with his new fiancée, Pat. I p** him off because I ask him if he had a prenup in front of everybody.”*

Despite the awkward moment, Salley’s friendship with Lawrence and his conversation with director Michael Bay secured him the role of Fletcher.
From Bad Boys to the Bulls and Beyond
Salley’s acting career complemented his successful NBA tenure.
Drafted by the Detroit Pistons in 1986, he was instrumental in their “Bad Boys” championship runs.
Notably, he was one of the few Pistons who congratulated Michael Jordan and the Bulls after being swept in the 1991 Eastern Conference Finals, earning Jordan’s respect.
Later, Salley joined the Bulls as a free agent during their record-setting 72-10 season, winning his third championship.
His career culminated with a fourth title alongside Shaquille O’Neal on the 2000 Los Angeles Lakers, making him the first NBA player to win championships in three decades with three different teams.
