Patrick Mahomes takes blame in Super Bowl LIX loss to Eagles
NEW ORLEANS, La. — The Kansas City Chiefs were destroyed by the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday evening, in one of the worst defeat in the Patrick Mahomes era.
It was a shocking result for the Chiefs, who have seen near unprecedented postseason success over the past seven seasons.
Mahomes struggled the entire game, throwing a pick six and another interception at the Chiefs 14, leading to 14 points for the Eagles. The Eagles defensive line wreaked havoc all game, tallying six sacks and constantly making Mahomes uncomfortable in the pocket.
He took accountability for the loss postgame.
“I have to be better next time,” Mahomes said. “I can’t turn the ball over early in the game when it’s not going our way. I have to learn from that and try to be better in the next opportunity that I’ll hopefully get.
“We didn’t play great football. It started with myself and I will take full ownership of that.”
Mahomes finished 21/32 with 257 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.
The loss felt very similar to when the Chiefs lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV, a game in which Mahomes was constantly pressured and the offense only put up nine points. Both losses are something Mahomes said would stick with him for the rest of his career.
“Both sucked, there’s no way around it. Anytime you lose the Super Bowl it’s the worst feeling the world,” Mahomes said.
“They’ll stick with you the rest of your career. These will be the two losses that motivate me to be even better for the rest of my career because you only get so few of these. They hurt probably more than the wins feel good.”
The Chiefs offense was inconsistent at times this season, especially early in the season. Mahomes spoke what he needs to improve on so the offense can be more productive.
“I thought our team played really well. I feel like I didn’t play to my standard, just with the struggles that I had early in the season. There’s things that I have to get better at and they kind of showed today, on the biggest stage.”
“I’m going to have to find a way this offseason to combat what defenses are doing to me as far as rush lanes and different coverages that they’re playing,” Mahomes said. “I want to come back and play better football this next season.”
Mahomes will look to get back to his MVP form during the 2025 season. The Chiefs will attack the draft and figure out the questions on offense, most notably, the left tackle position. There is also uncertainty about whether Travis Kelce will retire and if Rashee Rice will be suspended.
With Mahomes and Andy Reid at the helm, you’d have to expect the Chiefs to make the necessary changes to put them right back in Super Bowl contention.
