Caitlin Clark’s Flagrant Foul on Angel Reese Triggers Dawn Staley’s 20 Million Locker Room Confession

The 2025 WNBA season tipped off with more drama than anyone expected. At the center of it all? The heated clash between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. The fallout took a serious turn, with allegations that Reese was targeted with racial sl-rs–prompting the WNBA to launch an official investigation. It’s been a chaotic first week, to say the least. But with these two stars, tension has always followed. Even Dawn Staley joined in recently, sharing her thoughts on a podcast.
One thing’s crystal clear–when Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese step on the court together, the world watches. Their rivalry, which exploded during the 2024 NCAA Tournament with a jaw-dropping 12.3 million viewers, has seamlessly carried over into the WNBA. The momentum hasn’t slowed one bit. Their W game last June pulled in 2.25 million viewers on CBS, and that number climbed to 2.7 million during Saturday’s clash on ABC.
That Indiana Fever vs. Chicago Sky game didn’t just pull numbers–it actually made history. According to The Athletic, the game drew the largest WNBA regular-season audience in 25 years, peaking at 3.1 million viewers! Even Dawn Staley gave it a nod during her recent appearance on The Breakfast Club.
Dawn Staley gave Caitlin Clark her flowers, crediting her for introducing a new generation of fans to women’s basketball–but she made it clear the WNBA has so much more to offer. Speaking on The Breakfast Club, Staley said:
“I do think there are new fans that haven’t watched our game, and they really don’t know. So they’re only singularly focused on Caitlin, right? Right. So, when you’re that — and that’s their idol — that’s who attracts them. But I just hope that they’ll open their eyes to the rest of the talent that is there. Like, the product — the product is incredible, and it’s in high demand. We played Caitlin in the national championship last year, right? Twenty million. It topped off at whatever it topped off at — the most, right? I know they saw us. Like, I know they saw us. I know they saw us have an undefeated season. I know they saw Kamilla Cardoso. I know they saw Ashlyn Watkins.”
South Carolina’s win over Caitlin Clark and Iowa was one for the history books. The title game averaged 18.7 million viewers across ABC and ESPN. At its peak? A jaw-dropping 24 million. Since 2019, only the NFL, World Cup, and Olympics have topped that. Wild, right? Sure, everyone followed Clark’s iconic senior run. But they also knew she was up against a juggernaut. South Carolina went undefeated and backed it up on the biggest stage. Fans tuned in for Caitlin. But they left knowing just how dominant the Gamecocks were.
That’s the bigger picture. The WNBA isn’t just about the Fever or the Sky. The talent pool runs deep. But lately, the spotlight has drifted. More drama, less basketball. And that’s what analysts like Rachel DeMita want and rightfully so! The focus should be back on the game. Where it belongs! That said, Staley did share her thoughts on the heated moment between Reese and Clark. Let’s take a look at what she had to say.
Dawn Staley can’t wait to watch Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese play again
Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley echoed the same sentiment as both Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. To her, it was just a basketball play — nothing more. She believes people are blowing things out of proportion. But like the rest of us, Staley is hyped for what’s next.
“I’m looking forward to the next time they play too,” Staley said. “I’m going to be glued in just like everybody else.” Don’t worry, coach. Clark and Reese will face off four more times this season– and you can bet those games will keep smashing viewership records.
There’s no doubt the Caitlin Clark–Angel Reese rivalry has taken the game to new heights. But with all that buzz has come a wave of off-court drama –and honestly, the W doesn’t need that. If the goal is to grow the sport, then the product on the court should always come first. That’s where the focus should be.
And let’s be real — there isn’t much of a rivalry between the Fever and the Sky if you look at the numbers. Indiana holds a 4-1 record over Chicago. That gap says it all. So maybe it’s time we stop forcing rivalries and start appreciating what the rest of the league brings to the table. There’s a lot to love in the W beyond just two teams.
