NHL’s 3rd-Most Punchable Face Matthew Tkachuk Gets Decked For 2nd Game In A Row
Coming back from a long injury can be challenging, especially for a player who plays with as much edge as Matthew Tkachuk. The Florida Panthers winger made his return after missing 47 games due to surgery, and the spotlight was on him right away.
Known for mixing skill with physicality, Tkachuk has found himself in the thick of battles on the ice. His aggressive style continues to draw both respect from teammates and frustration from opponents, putting him at the center of most nights.
Matthew Tkachuk’s Aggressive Return Includes Hits, Penalties, as Panthers Get Needed Depth

Tkachuk returned to the Panthers’ lineup against the San Jose Sharks, logging nearly 21 minutes of ice time in his first game back. Despite Florida’s 4-1 loss, Tkachuk was active, registering three shots on goal, a hit, a blocked shot, and drawing attention with a roughing penalty on Vincent Desharnais.
In the next game against the Winnipeg Jets, Tkachuk’s playmaking stood out as he assisted on Sam Bennett’s regulation goal, marking his first point of the season in just his second game. His pass set up a key scoring opportunity, and Bennett praised him, saying, “It was a set play that worked. Both wingers came in and helped win the draw, and then [Tkachuk] came around and found me in the middle. It was a great pass by him.”
Tkachuk’s return has not been without consequences. According to the Athletic survey about ‘NHL’s most punchable face’, Tkachuk ranked as the third-most punchable face. His aggressive style draws penalties and retaliation, and this trend continued in the Jets game, with Tkachuk receiving a two-minute roughing penalty against Josh Morrissey. In the same play, he was decked by a hit from Adam Lowry, as he was engaged with Morrissey.
Despite the attention and punishment he attracts, Tkachuk’s influence on the Panthers is evident. Drafted sixth overall by Calgary in 2016, the 28-year-old winger combines scoring ability with aggressive play along the boards and in front of the net.
Since joining Florida, he has continued to produce and bring physicality as an alternate captain. While his 2025-26 season sample size remains small with one assist in two games, Tkachuk’s energy and intensity have once again boosted the Panthers’ depth.
The Panthers will rely on him again when they visit the Minnesota Wild on Jan. 24, at 9 p.m. ET. They will hope his presence to slowly stabilize the team as they push toward a playoff spot in a competitive Atlantic Division race.
