In a tragedy that has left the community of Highland City, Florida, in deep mourning, a domestic dispute just three days before Christmas escalated into a horrific murder-suicide. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd provided a somber account of the events that transpired on Thursday night, detailing how a simple disagreement over a television program led to the destruction of an entire family.
A Night of Joy Turned to Horror
The incident began as 47-year-old Jason Kenny was drinking and watching a San Francisco 49ers game. His wife, Crystal Kenny, was also home along with her three children: a 12-year-old son, a 13-year-old daughter, and a 1-year-old biological child of the couple.
Around 11:00 PM, an argument erupted when Crystal suggested they change the channel to watch something else. As the dispute turned violent, Crystal urged her 12-year-old son to run to a neighbor’s house and call 911. As the boy fled, he heard the first of several gunshots.
A “Christmas Miracle” Amidst Tragedy

When deputies arrived minutes later, they discovered a scene of absolute devastation. Crystal Kenny had been shot and killed. In a nearby bedroom, they found her 13-year-old daughter suffering from two gunshot wounds—one to the shoulder and one to the face.
In what Sheriff Judd described as a “Christmas miracle,” the bullet that hit the young girl’s face traveled along the bridge of her nose and exited through the top of her head, narrowly missing her brain. Despite her critical injuries, she remained alert and was able to tell investigators, “I begged him, don’t shoot me… and he shot me anyway.” She is currently in stable condition at Lakeland Regional Health and is expected to survive.
A Final Act of Cowardice
Following the shooting, Jason Kenny fled the scene in his vehicle. During his flight, he called his sister in New York, confessing that he had done “something very, very bad” and stating that he would not go to jail for the rest of his life.
Law enforcement tracked Kenny to his deceased father’s property, where he had barricaded himself in a shed. As deputies set up a perimeter and called for his surrender, a single gunshot rang out. Upon entering the shed, they found Kenny dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the forehead.
A Warning Ignored
Investigators later found an undated, open note written by Crystal to her husband. In it, she expressed concern over his recurring drug and alcohol abuse, telling him he “needed God” and that his behavior was not how a family should live. While the note was not dated, its presence in the open suggests it may have been a point of contention during the fatal argument.

Sheriff Judd noted that while there were no prior police calls to the residence for domestic violence, family members indicated that Kenny had been abusive toward Crystal for some time. “The only thing he did right that night was shoot himself,” Judd stated bluntly during the press conference. “If he felt that way, he could have taken himself out and not hurt those two beautiful people.”
A Broken Family
The tragedy has left three children without parents. The 12-year-old and 13-year-old are currently with their grandparents, while plans for the 1-year-old are being handled by the Department of Children and Families.
Homicide detectives described the house as being fully decorated for the holidays, with a large Christmas tree and wrapped presents waiting for a celebration that will never happen. Sheriff Judd concluded the briefing with a plea for those struggling with domestic violence or mental health issues to seek help, reminding the public that services are available 24/7 by calling 911.
