NBA Star Kyrie Irving, Tyler Perry, Fantasia, and Other Black Celebrities Rally to Help 93-Year-Old Woman Save Her Hilton Head Land
Hilton Head, South Carolina— A 93-year-old woman’s battle to keep her ancestral land has captured national attention and inspired a wave of support from Black celebrities and the broader community.
A Legacy Under Threat
For nearly three decades, Josephine Wright has called her 1.8-acre property in Hilton Head home. But her family’s connection to the land stretches back much further—shortly after the Civil War, her ancestors acquired the property, making it a symbol of generational perseverance and Black heritage in the South.
Now, that legacy is under threat. Bailey Point Investment LLC, a development company building a 147-unit neighborhood nearby, has filed a lawsuit against Wright over property line disputes. Wright and her family believe the lawsuit is a pressure tactic, designed to force her to sell the land to make way for further development.
A Community Rallies
Determined not to be bullied off her land, Wright’s granddaughter, Charise Graves, launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover mounting legal expenses. The family’s initial goal was $250,000—a daunting sum for most, but one that quickly drew the attention and generosity of supporters nationwide.
Among those moved to action was NBA star Kyrie Irving, who donated $40,000. His contribution, along with those from thousands of others, helped push the fundraising total to $350,000, giving the family renewed hope in their legal battle.
Celebrity Support Grows
Irving’s donation was just the beginning. Filmmaker and media mogul Tyler Perry used his platform to shine a spotlight on Wright’s story, declaring that she “has a village behind her.” His words sparked further celebrity involvement, with singer Fantasia, actress Gabrielle Dennis, former Food Network personality Gina Neely, gospel singer Tina Campbell, and rapper Meek Mill all voicing their support.
The groundswell of attention has not only raised vital funds but also brought national scrutiny to the tactics used by developers to acquire land from long-standing Black families in the South.
More Than Just a Legal Battle
For Josephine Wright, the fight is about more than property lines. It’s about preserving a piece of history and honoring the sacrifices of her ancestors. “This land is my family’s legacy,” Wright has said. “It’s where my children and grandchildren have grown up. I’m not giving up.”
Her determination has resonated with many who see her struggle as emblematic of a larger fight against displacement and erasure of Black communities.
The Road Ahead
While the outcome of the lawsuit remains uncertain, the support Josephine Wright has received underscores the power of community and the importance of standing up for what’s right. As Tyler Perry noted, Wright truly does have a village behind her—one that stretches far beyond Hilton Head, united in the belief that some legacies are worth fighting for.
